Vineyards

Pyrenees Ridge wines are sourced from two separate vineyards which are located in the Avoca area of the Pyrenees Wine Region. These vineyards consist of our estate vineyard in Lamplough just outside of Avoca and a contract vineyard located close to the foothills of the Pyrenees ranges which has grown grapes for Pyrenees Ridge for several years.

Our estate vineyard is planted out to mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Shiraz, which makes up our premium Cabernet Sauvignon and our Cabernet Shiraz blend. This vineyard is now 10 years old being planted in 1998 and is now in full production after an early struggle with hungry kangaroos and wallabies that thought nice, sweet, lush vine leaves and shoots were better than dried old grass to eat. This vineyard is in a well sheltered position and is surrounded by native bushland and the vines are planted in very thirsty infertile quartz/gravel loam soils which produce rich intense fruit characters in the grapes.

The other vineyard is made up of predominantly Shiraz and this goes to make up a large percentage of our premium Pyrenees Shiraz. The other varieties that are grown in the vineyard are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Merlot. Most of the vines in this vineyard are between 5 to 20 years old and are now producing some high quality fruit that produce wines with all the regional characters that make the wines from the Pyrenees region sought after.

Being at the foothills of the Pyrenees ranges, the vineyard is in a fairly sheltered position and there is a slightly higher rainfall than the vineyard at Lamplough. The soil in this vineyard is also gravel/quartz loam which can be very harsh and infertile, but with drip irrigation and a lot of vine care this vineyard produces grapes that have rich, ripe, concentrated fruit flavours and are well suited to Pyrenees Ridge.
